October 2012

October 2012

It’s hard to believe we’ve already had a month of school.  All the children have been settling into the routine, exploring the classroom, and making new friends.   We’ve been working hard to learn names and what to do at clean-up time!

We’ve been lucky with the weather so far and have made it outside most days.  Please prepare your child for any weather.   Boots are a great asset for the children who have been enjoying digging and driving trucks through the mud, and mittens will become important as the weather cools.  When we can’t get outside due to weather and end the day upstairs dancing, please try to gather your child’s belongings and meet us upstairs.  It helps eliminate congestion on the stairs, making it safer for everyone.

Don’t miss the next parent committee meeting  – Tuesday, October 16th at 6:30 pm.  It’s a good way to meet other parents, hear about what’s happening, and have input about the program.  Feel free to bring your children – we’re usually done by 7:30.

Remember, there’s no school from Thursday, October 4th to Monday, October 8th for Columbus Day weekend.   Hopefully we’ll have wonderful weather for the long weekend

Fundraising:  Then next couple of months are busy fundraising months for us.  We’ll be starting our first fundraiser of the year soon.  Watch your cubby for information on our Acorn Designs fundraiser.  This is a new fundraiser for TCNS but we hope it will become a regular fundraiser.  Just share the order form with friends and families.  TCNS receives half of the money collected.

Fieldtrips:  The TTh and Two’s class will be taking a trip to the Cornell Orchards on October 11th (weather permitting).  We’ll meet at the orchard at 9:30 and pickup at noon.  Two’s parents will be staying with us for this trip.  On Halloween children are invited to wear their costumes to school and we’ll have a parade to Juniper Manor.  The residents will share snack with us, and we’ll walk back to TCNS for outdoor play.  We’re also hoping to walk to our Camp St. lot sometime this month with TTh as well.  Watch for more information to come.

October Activities:  During October we will be continuing our autumn theme, talking about apples and pumpkins and Halloween.  We have a number of great books, wonderful authors and illustrators this month.  We’ll be reading The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall, Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert, The Bumpy Little Pumpkin by Margery Cuyler, and There was an Old Monster by Ed Emberly et al.   We will make an apple tree collage and do apple stamping, plus apple tasting and make applesauce.  We will also be doing a fieldtrip to Cornell Orchards on the 11th.  We’ll fingerpaint and watercolor leaves, and do leaf sequencing.  We’ll also explore pumpkins and create our own out of paper, salt dough, and other orange materials we can find.

Terrific Twos:  October is bringing us many changes all around.  In our classroom we will be changing the leaves on our trees and adding fall songs and activities to our circle time.  We are becoming comfortable with our friends and learning names.  Please use your friends books at home.  We will be reading books about the changes we see outside all around us.  As always we are encouraging use of words and independence in helping ourselves.  Deva and I are seeing growth already.  Thank you for working at home too.  At circle time we will add our “The More We Get Together” song and “Fall is a Colorful Season.” Ask your children to sing them for you.   Thank you for the delicious snacks you have been sending in and for helping with keeping our classroom so clean!

Fall is a colorful season,

Fall is a colorful season,

Fall is a colorful season,

When the leaves fall down!
