April 2010
Spring is here!! At TCNS we know that spring means weather – rain, snow, mud, and hopefully sun… totally unpredictable weather! Please come prepared for any kind of weather. We never know what spring will bring. The children love to play outside and get dirty!
We really enjoyed the chance to meet with everyone during parent-teacher conferences. It’s a treat to get to tell all of you how wonderful your children are! If anyone didn’t get a chance to sign up and would like to meet with us, please let me know. We can always set aside time after school one day.
Remember, there’s no school the week of April 5-9th for spring break. For those of you traveling; we wish you a good trip. For those of us staying here, let’s hope for some beautiful spring weather! There is also no school on Friday, April 30th while Jackie, Joan and I attend an early childhood conference. We should come back with some great ideas to share with your children. Note also that we’ve scheduled a spring hike to the falls for Wednesday, April 28 – weather permitting.
It’s been great to see so many parents at our parent meetings. Our next meeting will be Monday, April 19th at 6:30. I’m hoping to get together a presentation on kid-friendly cooking before the end of the year. Watch for more details!
Fundraising:
Thanks to everyone (especially ‘Team McPuppet’) for all the help with the Mrs. McPuppet show. It was so much fun and we made $678 for TCNS! At the last parent meeting we talked about trying to do a rummage sale the last weekend of school. You can do spring cleaning and help TCNS at the same time! More details to come. We’ll also continue our bottle collections through the end of the school year.
Thanks to everyone who filled out the parent survey! The results were very satisfying for us and we appreciate the wonderful comments (and any constructive suggestions). We’ve talked a little about modifying our observation form to try to give parents different information about how your children spend their time at TCNS.
Registration: Registration forms for next fall (2-year old program and regular preschool) will be available after the April break (update: see Admissions page for form). I expect MWF spots to fill quickly again, so get your forms in early. I’m hoping to have registrations for all returning students and siblings returned by May 1st. Open House for the general public will be Wednesday, May 19th.
Community Service Project: The Trumansburg Food Pantry is applying for a grant in which they will receive $1 for every item donated during the months of March and April. TCNS is hoping to help by asking you to bring items here to TCNS which we will deliver to the food pantry at the end of the month.
April Activities:
We’ll start right in after spring break by reading a very appropriate book called Rain Talk by Mary Serfozo. We’ll do a pastel spiderweb and watercolor, make paper plate ‘rain’ shakers, and experiment with color mixing. Next, we’ll read Farfallina and Marcel by Holly Keller. This is a great book about an unusual friendship between a caterpillar and a bird. We’ll make tissue paper daffodils, watercolor butterflies, and egg-carton caterpillars. The last week of April we’ll be reading Flip, Float, Fly by JoAnn Early Macken. This is a great book about different types of seeds and how they get around. We’ll do seed mosaics, make seed birdfeeders, and try sprouting some vegetables.
Five little duckies went swimming one day
Over the pond and far away
Mama duck went ‘quack, quack, quack’,
But only four little duckies came back
Four little duckies…. (until, one little ducky…)
Daddy duck went “QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!”
And all five little duckies came swimming right back!
