May 2010

May 2010
We have a VERY busy month ahead of us! We’ve scheduled a number of fieldtrips and are hoping to fill in some others as we go along. With the nice weather we’ll be spending as much time as possible outside!

Be sure you have turned in your registration form and deposit! We will be having Open House on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:30 and begin taking new registrations. Please spread the word to any friends with young children.

The last parent meeting of the year is scheduled for Monday May 17th – discussion topic to be announced. We’re also looking for a couple of parents willing to co-chair the parent committee meetings for next year. Parent meetings are an important way for parents to stay connected. Please consider helping out – this counts as your parent job! There won’t be a parent meeting in June. Instead we’ll have a dessert-to-share at the T-burg school playground on Wednesday, June 2nd at 6:30.

Fieldtrips:
We have a number of fieldtrips scheduled this month. For the TTh class, we’ll be going to the library for SPCA story hour on May 6th and hike to the falls on May 20th. For the falls hike, we meet at central pavilion, hike to the falls, and then return to the playground for pick-up. In the MWF class we have a trip to Sapsucker Woods on May 5th. We’ll also go to P&S Excavating to explore the big machinery on May 14th. Extra parents and siblings are always welcome to join us on fieldtrips.

Sibling Night will be Wednesday and Thursday May 26th and 27th from 6:30-7:30. This is very similar to special person’s night. Children are invited to bring their siblings for a special project and lots of fun, snack and time on the playground!

Fundraising:
Please take a look at the new scrip fundraising program. This should be an easy way to boost our overall fundraising. Spring orders are due soon! We’re also planning an end of the year rummage sale. Watch for details as we get closer! A second chance to buy t-shirts will be coming soon, plus yearbooks will be available.

Remember, we have a long Memorial Day weekend with no school on Friday, May 28th and Monday, May 31st.

May Activities:
We’ll begin the month of May by reading Are You My Mother? I’m sure everyone is familiar with this story, which nicely fits with both Mother’s Day and our fieldtrip to Sapsucker Woods. We’ll be making a special gift for mom and the TTh class will be making dog biscuits for our trip to the SPCA story hour at the library. The following week we’ll be reading a great story about sharing called It’s Mine by Leo Lionni. We’ll make a paper plate frog and do fly swatter painting. Our next book will be A Grand Old Tree by Mary Newell DePalma. This is a wonderful story about the life of a tree and will fit well with our hike to the falls. We’ll be making an arm tracing tree collage and planting seeds. For the last week of May we’ll read Dot the Firedog by Lisa Desimini. We’re hoping to schedule a fire station visit this week and we’ll make a paper fire truck.
